This story begins like many others do, on a Tuesday night in March when the email popped up in my notifications. Nikeesha inquired about wedding photography for her October 10th ceremony. From that moment on, we just clicked. We had our first in-person meeting at a local coffee shop named Pipers Tea & Coffee, where we talked for an hour about her engagement and wedding to David. She shared their story, how the planning was coming along, and the excitement she was experiencing so far.

David had proposed on Valentine’s Day just a few weeks prior, and the planning had begun immediately. She wanted an October wedding, giving them nearly eight months to plan. When we met at Pipers, Nikeesha came prepared. I loved seeing her wedding binder, already full of documents, ideas and inventory. This was a bride who planned every detail of her wedding, and I loved it.

We talked for the better part of an hour. I walked her through full wedding days from my past galleries, and her thoughtful questions told me she could already picture her own day in detail. I remember being so excited to find a bride with such focused intent on making her day perfect.

By the end of that conversation, we hugged and parted ways until we could meet again with David present. As a long-distance driver, he wasn’t able to attend our first meeting.

Weeks went by, and I poured a lot of energy into David and Nikeesha’s wedding planning. From a photography standpoint, weddings require a lot of forethought. It’s not a day where I just “show up and take photos.” It’s a day I plan very closely with my clients, so that each one feels cared for on a deeply personal level. By the time our second meeting rolled around, I had a plan for their engagement session. I offer three wedding collections, and all three include a complimentary engagement session.

The goal for our second meeting was setting a time for that session. I had a vision, and thankfully David and Nikeesha were totally on board. I wanted a soft, elegant look for them, and I shared my Engagement Session Style Guide to help them prepare. My idea was a tour of Land Between the Lakes in the last hours before sunset, with three locations: Empire Point, Duncan Lake, and finally the Canal Loop Road at sunset. With the plan set, we parted ways.

Months passed, and before long August 23 rolled around. Nikeesha and I had been chatting about our tour of LBL. She had trusted my vision for their photos and arrived dressed in a luxurious style that matched it perfectly. Nikeesha wore a black floor-length gown with a ruched bodice, braided straps, and a beaded waist, and David matched her in a black vest, crisp white shirt, and bow tie. Against the green fields and the old barn at Empire Point, their formal look stood out, and every time he twirled her the skirt moved with her.

I watched in awe as my vision became reality. David and Nikeesha’s love was on full display as I guided them from one pose to the next. I had designed the session to allow 45 minutes in each space, building to a sunset finale at the water’s edge near the Canal Loop Road, and I had prepared snacks ahead of time so we could take a break between destinations. They were amazing the entire time, moving effortlessly from one pose to the next. I was on cloud nine.

The evening went by very quickly, and the finale at the Canal Loop was soon upon us. David’s parents arrived with their beloved pet Veno, who was dressed for the occasion in an adorable tux.

We concluded the session as the sun set over Kentucky Lake. Even though it was slightly overcast, the colors behind them were beautiful. A faint glow of pinks and oranges danced on the clouds, and the calm water mirrored the sky for their final photos.

As we made our way back to the parked vehicles, I was left with a profound sense of gratitude. For years, I had dreamt of planning this exact kind of engagement session for a client. David and Nikeesha had felt it too, finding the right photographer for their very special occasion.

The following week brought a surprise to Nikeesha’s inbox. I had explained that I would send a sneak peek of their session within a few days. When I began editing the next day, though, I finished the entire gallery within 24 hours of their session. I pride myself on a quick turnaround, and I was so excited to share their full gallery. David and Nikeesha were over the moon with the images, and they told me the delivery made them even more excited for their wedding day.

Nearly seven weeks later, that day arrived. My eight-hour timeline began at 1:00 at Destini’s Salon on South 3rd Street in downtown Paducah, home to Luv Lux Beauty Studio by LaRita Leavell. Nikeesha was sitting in the makeup chair of Alyssa Rankin of Lyssa’s Lavish Looks when I walked through the doors. Everyone was working hard to prepare for the ceremony. Several bridesmaids were being tended to by Delarion Johnson of Delightful Glams, while others were having their hair done by Avis Harris of A.M. Styles. An excited buzz flowed through the entire salon, with music playing and early afternoon drinks.

I began the day by photographing her details in a back room. Her gown, bouquet, perfume, jewelry, shoes, stationery and other accessories were thoughtfully prepared ahead of my arrival, and I went to work photographing each element. Her gown, from My Best Friend Jenna in Jackson, Tennessee, was an ivory fit-and-flare covered in lace appliqués and finished with an illusion neckline and a long tulle train edged in scalloped lace. It hung beside an arched mirror on a hanger that read “Mrs.” Her bouquet, created by Lasica Allen-McEwen, carried the fall colors of the day, spiced copper and cream with deep emerald roses, and I photographed her rings tucked inside the blooms. Crystal sandals, her Versace Bright Crystal perfume, and the invitation suite, with his and her vow books in gold foil, rounded out the details. At the base of the gown stood the broom, dressed in orange and white roses, waiting for the moment they would jump it later that day.

As I wrapped up the detail portion of my timeline, I went back into the salon to start photographing the people Nikeesha had chosen to surround herself with on this very special day. Their excitement was evident as they hurried around the salon getting ready. Their spiced copper satin gowns hung nearby, a warm preview of the color I would see again at the church.

In the midst of the hurry, several bridesmaids gathered around Nikeesha as she opened special gifts. There was a lovely blue brooch, her something borrowed and blue, a new ceramic dish bearing the initial of her new last name, and a garter with blue detail. As she opened each one, the tears began to flow. Each gift had been chosen with her in mind.

My time with Nikeesha and her bridesmaids came to a close, and I made the short drive to Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where she would make her vows to David. I entered the sanctuary, where they would soon stand in front of their gathered friends and family. The space was quiet, not yet bustling with the energy of a crowd. I snapped photos of the colors I had been following all day. Three gold hoops rose at the front of the sanctuary, draped in spiced copper and emerald, with roses gathered at the top. Down the aisle, every pew carried a swag of copper gauze and white roses. Near the pulpit, the sand for the unity ceremony sat in glass, copper, emerald, and white, waiting for their parents to pour it. Care and attention to detail showed in every corner. The entryway housed a table adorned with photos, a guestbook and mementos.

David and his groomsmen entered the sanctuary shortly after my arrival, marking the start of their portrait time. David had chosen a sophisticated tuxedo from GQ Fashions in Clarksville, TN, and I started with his portraits. His ivory brocade jacket was woven with emerald and gold, in florals and scrolls that caught the light with every turn. Wide cream satin lapels framed a deep emerald vest, and a crisp white shirt sat beneath it. His bow tie was cut from the same brocade and fastened with a small jeweled clasp. Emerald trousers and white leather shoes finished the look, the cream carried from his lapels all the way to the floor. A boutonniere in copper and cream, tied with a gold crystal ribbon, sat on his lapel and brought the palette from the salon to the front of the church. His groomsmen wore the same deep emerald, finished with spiced copper pocket squares and brown leather shoes.

After David’s solo portraits, I called up each groomsman for a portrait with him. These are the men David chose to stand with him on the day he would wed his beautiful bride, so I always take the time to photograph each pair, then the group as a whole.

Nikeesha and David had decided their first look would happen as she walked down the aisle, so we wrapped up the groomsmen portraits and I went to find her. Her matron of honor and a few of her bridesmaids were waiting with her in a quiet room, and it was her turn. She needed her veil secured, the last step before her portraits. I stepped in, securing her veil to her hair, not realizing that her matron of honor was capturing video.

With her veil in place and David tucked safely out of sight, Nikeesha and I made a slow walk toward the sanctuary. I gathered her train in my hands so it would stay clean, and I didn’t think twice about it. My only focus was getting her to the front of the church. Most of her bridesmaids were already seated in the sanctuary, and the few who had waited with her followed us in. They watched as she stepped in front of the gold hoops, draped in emerald and spiced copper, and I began photographing her there.

Her bridesmaids fell quiet as she stepped in front of the altar, watching her in reverent awe. Months of hard work had led up to this very moment. Nikeesha was ready, not just for photos, but for her “happily ever after.” I photographed her for several minutes, coaching her through every pose. She met each instruction with grace and poise, settling into a steady rhythm as my shutter clicked away. Bridesmaids took turns standing next to her, just like David did with his groomsmen. Each woman beside her had been chosen with care, a close friend who had watched their relationship grow.

The ceremony hour was approaching, and soon it was time to hide the bridal party away as guests arrived. The sanctuary filled with families and friends finding their seats. Before long, a large crowd had gathered to witness David and Nikeesha make solemn promises to one another. Guests had come from both families, from church, from work and from years of friendship, and the room filled with the low hum of people who had been waiting for this day. Music played softly while quiet conversations took place, and everyone watched for the moment Nikeesha would walk down the aisle to David.

Guests filling the pews of the sanctuary and looking toward the white aisle runner scattered with petals before the ceremony

A hush fell over the crowd as the music shifted into a new song. David entered from the side with Rev. Dr. Calvin R. Cole Sr. and his father, who was also his best man. The crowd erupted in cheers, rising from their seats to greet the groom. David remained stoic at the altar, showing only the slightest emotion as the moment settled on him. His gaze stayed forward, set on the doors where his bride would appear.

Their parents came forward to the sand and poured the first layers, laying the foundation for what David and Nikeesha would add later in the ceremony. They took their seats, followed by the bridal party, each bridesmaid linked arm in arm with a groomsman.

Then it was time. David stayed focused on the doors at the back of the room as Rev. Dr. Cole Sr. invited everyone to stand and the bridal march began. I stayed with David, capturing every expression as he caught his first glimpse of his bride. That was all it took. Tears started to form as he was overwhelmed with happiness, and his father stood proudly beside him, watching his son marry the love of his life.

Nikeesha walked slowly toward her groom, arm in arm with her father and stepfather. Guests cheered as she passed. Her veil covered her face, but her joy shone through as she laid eyes on David for the first time that day. Tears flowed as they reached the front of the church, and Rev. Dr. Cole Sr. invited everyone to be seated.

After nearly eight months of planning, David and Nikeesha stood facing each other, ready to promise their futures. Nikeesha later described the day as a celebration of love, family, heritage, and community, and all four were in that sanctuary.

As the ceremony began, the guests kept up their joyful shouts and cheers. I moved quietly around the sanctuary, photographing the congregation and the bridal party. Both sets of parents were easy to find, and their faces said it all. David’s mother, Janice, who also served as their wedding coordinator, kept looking from her son to her husband standing beside him, with a soft, proud gaze I won’t forget.

David and Nikeesha spoke their vows and exchanged rings, circles with no end, and slid them onto each other’s fingers.

Next came the unity sand ceremony. Their parents had already laid the foundation in cream and white. David and Nikeesha joined hands and poured emerald and copper on top of it, and the colors settled together in the glass. Then they made their way back to the altar.

With vows spoken, rings exchanged, and the sand joined, Rev. Dr. Cole Sr. pronounced them husband and wife. David lifted her veil, gazed lovingly at her, cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her. The crowd answered with thunderous cheers, and Nikeesha wrapped her arms around her husband and melted into his embrace.

They turned to face their guests as Rev. Dr. Cole Sr. presented, for the first time, Mr. and Mrs. Jones.

The couple closed their ceremony with a tradition that was especially meaningful to them: jumping the broom, the same one I had photographed at the salon. Rooted in African American heritage, it honors couples who were once denied the right to marry, and it represents leaving the past behind and stepping into a new chapter together. David and Nikeesha jumped, and the sanctuary roared. They walked up the aisle as husband and wife while their loved ones cheered them on.

Outside the church, they were soon surrounded by hugs and well wishes as guests made their way to their vehicles. The ceremony had ended, but the celebration was only beginning. Once the crowd had dispersed, we returned to the altar for portraits.

Family and close friends gathered at the altar for formal portraits. The gold hoops, draped in emerald and spiced copper, made a natural backdrop for David and Nikeesha, and their bridesmaids and groomsmen then joined them on either side for the group photos. We moved quickly through this set to catch our golden hour window. Rain had threatened on and off all day on October 10, but the forecast showed one opening: only a 15% chance right at sunset.

As soon as the family portraits wrapped, we took the risk. David and Nikeesha’s wedding transportation was a vintage Cadillac Fleetwood from Chip Wynn Motors, and the newly developed riverfront in downtown Paducah suited it well. At the riverfront, I told the driver where to park. Weeks earlier, Nikeesha had emailed me her vision for these portraits, and with those images in mind, I guided them through several poses beside the car.

Our risk paid off tenfold. Over the next 45 minutes, we made some of the strongest images of the entire day. We walked the pathway down to the river when the sun’s glow caught my attention. At first it sat low on the horizon, then it grew into a stunning mix of pink, orange, purple, and red. By the time we arrived back at the car, the color stretched across the entire sky. That’s when I captured these.

You can’t pack a sky like this in a camera bag, arrange it like florals, or set it up like a backdrop. We had spent hours worrying about the rain, but God had other plans. He used those clouds to paint the most glorious sunset I have ever photographed on a wedding day.

As the colors faded, it was time for David and Nikeesha to head to their reception at the Robert Cherry Civic Center. We pulled into the parking lot where their guests had gathered, anxiously awaiting their arrival.

Inside, the entrance carried the colors of the day with it. Spiced copper and emerald chiffon fell in long swags against a wall of white draping, and a gold-framed mirror welcomed guests in cream script, wrapped in roses and copper gauze. Gold candle stands and a pedestal of copper, cream, and emerald florals sat beside it. Two tall banners held portraits from their engagement session.

The bridal party gathered at the entrance, ready for their grand entrance into the celebration. David and Nikeesha waited just behind them for their turn. In the corner, DJ Ricky Murphy, known as DJ Slikk, “The Mixtape Ironman,” had his booth set up and was ready to bring the party to life.

The bridesmaids led the way, dancing in with their arms raised and marquee-style signs that said what the room was waiting to hear: “Introducing the Newlyweds,” “Celebrating Mr. & Mrs. Jones,” and “Make some noise for the Joneses!” Light-up wands glowed in their hands as guests turned in their seats. The groomsmen followed in deep emerald suits with copper ties and pocket squares, dancing through the tables while phones went up all around the room. Everyone in the processional was smiling, and the cheers got louder with every group that came through.

The anticipation built to a fever pitch. When David and Nikeesha rounded the corner, the room burst into shouts and cheers. Both wore sunglasses for the occasion, and hand in hand they made their way to the front of the room, Nikeesha’s bouquet raised high in one hand and David holding up a gold bottle in the other. Applause and shouts of praise followed them all the way to their waiting bridal party. Hundreds of guests had gathered to celebrate David and Nikeesha, and every table was full.

Tonya Warren’s decor carried the colors through the whole room. Copper and emerald gauze runners stretched down white-draped tables, and gold candle centerpieces rose over clusters of copper, cream, and emerald roses. The head table was lettered in gold with “Mr. & Mrs.”

The Southern Spread, owned by Brittany Crim-Freeman, kept the evening fed. A long grazing table ran along the wall with sliders, meatballs, filled croissants, charcuterie, and fresh fruit and vegetables. A signature drink menu, “Sip, Sip, Hooray… We’re the Joneses!,” offered his and hers cocktails: a Lemon Drop, a Sweet Sangria, an Old Fashioned, and a Honey Bourbon Smash.

Shortly after the grand entrance, David, Nikeesha, and the bridal party lined up to fill their plates, and the guests soon followed. David and Nikeesha enjoyed a hard-earned break from their busy day while DJ Slikk kept the music low until every guest had been served.

After a short time, David and Nikeesha were pulled back into the festivities for their first dance as husband and wife. Soft music began to play as they wrapped their arms around each other, and every eye in the room was on them. They only had eyes for each other, though, and looked completely immersed in the moment. I circled the couple, photographing their expressions throughout the dance, and their love seemed to brighten the room. The soft candlelight on each table mirrored the spark between them.

As their song swelled to a close, David held Nikeesha in a long embrace. Then he stepped away, and his mother, Janice, joined him on the floor. Their song began, and soon they were swaying to the music. Smiles and laughter filled the air as David spun his mom around the dance floor.

This was a different kind of love on display. I always tear up at these moments, because decades of love are in that dance, and it reminds me of dancing with my own children one day.

Their dance slowed, and mother and son embraced as applause filled the room. David and Nikeesha began mingling with their guests when something caught my eye across the room: David’s parents, embracing in a quiet corner.

Later, David and Nikeesha made their way to the cake table along the wall near the entrance, where two cakes waited. Parcell’s Bakery created the wedding cake, two tiers of white buttercream with fine horizontal ridges, crowned with a wooden “Mr & Mrs” arch and dressed in copper and rust roses, red berries, and gilded leaves. It rested on a gold geometric stand. Beside it, the groom’s cake by Brittany Crim-Freeman added a playful touch: a red and green football field topped with a Chiefs arrowhead. David uncorked a gold bottle and filled gold-rimmed flutes, and with their arms linked, he and Nikeesha raised a toast, their eyes on each other.

With the toast made, they made the first cut together and fed each other a bite while the crowd laughed and cheered. Slices were soon passed around, and guests settled back at their tables with cake in hand.

Speeches followed the champagne. David thanked the guests who had traveled long distances to be there, calling several of them out by name. Nikeesha took the microphone next and thanked the people who had made the day possible.

Two of Nikeesha’s bridesmaids spoke after her, sharing stories from years of friendship. As they described the care and compassion she had shown each of them, it was easy to see why she had chosen them to stand beside her.

Janice spoke next, sharing stories of David’s childhood and how much he loves his family, and welcoming Nikeesha into it. Cheers and applause followed her toast to the happy couple.

David’s father took the microphone next, and the room went quiet. He told the story of the day his son called to say he had found his future wife and wanted his father beside him as his best man. He spoke of his love for David’s mother and of the example of a God-centered marriage, and he asked David to always cherish Nikeesha, keep God at the front of their household, and never let go of her. David stood with the gold bottle still in his hand, a tearful smile spreading across his face.

David and his father embraced when the speech ended, and others began lining up for their turn at the microphone. Several guests shared their own stories, one after another, until the speeches wrapped up.

Two traditions were left before the night wound down. The ladies went first, lining up behind Nikeesha as she lifted her bouquet high and tossed it straight back. Cheers and laughter filled the room as one lucky guest caught it. Nikeesha then took a chair at the center of the room, and David removed the garter with blue detail she had opened at the salon earlier that day. Several men lined the back of the room, waiting. David raised his hand high and launched it straight back, and the laughter, cheers, and applause came again.

With the traditions behind them, the evening settled into a party. The DJ filled the room with music, and guests took to the floor. My day was nearly complete, with thousands of photos captured and time for just a few more. Nikeesha slipped away to change into her reception dress.

When she emerged in her second gown, several guests asked for photos with the happy couple. I followed them around the room, ending near the entrance, where the two engagement banners still hung. David and Nikeesha smiled with friends and loved ones gathered around them. I had shared my vision for those portraits at our second meeting, and now they hung behind the couple, with the people who love them standing in front.

I took the last photo, hugged David and Nikeesha, and thanked them for the day. Outside, the sky had gone dark and the lights of the venue spilled onto the street. The rain that had threatened all day had finally begun as a light drizzle, hours after the sunset we had risked it for. I pulled on my jacket and looked back once, watching the crowd still dancing, and knew I had witnessed something truly special.

Congratulations, David and Nikeesha. It was an honor to be part of your day.
